scape lodge garden, huddersfield
A garden that slots nicely into the landscape
Situated 1000 feet up in the Pennines, this south east facing garden has the views to die for, but the chilly wind can sometimes be a challenge. Originally built on the site of an old quarry, garden owners Elizabeth & David Smith aimed to make a garden that sat comfortably within the landscape, giving it a sense of place. The herbaceous plants, grasses and shrubs echo the cultivated versions of local flora, and likewise, the shade garden has planting that is reminiscent of the vegetation in local cloughs. Their planting is also influenced by the gardens and landscapes seen on their travels.
