The Garden Pictorial

Water meadow garden, milton keynes

A suburban wildlife wetland

When Andre Schott moved into his suburban home in 2019, he had a very clear idea of what he intended to achieve in his 13 - 35 metre south west facing garden: “My intentions were to create a water garden where you could walk from one pond to the next and feel like you are inside a wetland, not knowing where the water starts and finishes and be completely surrounded by wetland plants”.

Andre grew up in Holland and was definitely influenced by the watery ditches that were everywhere. Since the creation of his garden both Andre and his neighbours have noticed an upsurge in the local wildlife: not only have the birds, bees and dragonflies increased, but bats are frequently seen coming in close to the surface of the ponds. Andre has also found stretch spiders which specifically live in wetland areas.
